The present gallery is a result of the widening and extension of an earlier building: the SOKÓŁ Małopolska Regional Cultural Centre – originally built in 1892 as a venue for the “Sokół” Polish Gymnasts’ Society. In fact, since the date of construction, the building saw more than one remodelling and modification project.

The venue fits in the historical context very smoothly. Thanks to their modest size, the cuboids rising from an L-shaped plan match the scale of the surrounding buildings. The elevations, finished with sandstone slabs and harmonious in colour, reinforce the impression of neutrality.

Respect for the found context notwithstanding, the BWA Sokół Gallery is not lacking in character. It can be likened to an abstract sculpture form – a sign within the space, as well as a medium, which enables the viewer to understand and appreciate that space. Terraces and openings of varying sizes serve the latter purpose, framing the vistas of Nowy Sącz, both far and near.
